A program is a linear sequence of instructions that the machine unfolds to perform the operations recorded therein. A book is a linear sequence of words that the mind unfolds into impression. A state transitions to a state. I don't see much difference from the drawing of symbols through silicon and metal to the brush of symbols across the electrochemical mind. The symbols may carry great intent and may be used to achieve effect, but the mechanical working of the brushes is incidental to ideas.
